Private Investigation, OSINT & Due Diligence Insights in Ontario

Introducing the Second Edition of My Private Investigator Handbook

A condensed guide with a separately downloadable Toolkit

I’m pleased to introduce the second edition of my Private Investigator Handbook—a condensed edition designed for easier reading and practical reference, with a focus on private investigation in Canada and Ontario.

Following the publication of the original handbook, this edition presents the core guidance in a more compact format. Its purpose is to help readers navigate the subject more easily, whether they are exploring a career in investigation, developing their professional knowledge, or looking for a reference on investigative practice.

What Has Changed?

The second edition makes two central changes:

  • A condensed handbook: The material has been brought into a shorter, more focused format for reading and reference.
  • A separately downloadable Toolkit: The accompanying practical resources are available through www.theinvestigators.ca, keeping the handbook focused while allowing readers to access supporting materials separately.

The handbook and Toolkit are intended to complement each other: one explains the principles and approaches; the other provides resources to support their application.

What the Handbook Covers

The handbook explores the foundations of professional investigation, including:

  • Licensing and the regulatory framework in Canada, with particular attention to Ontario.
  • Ethics, privacy, and responsible information gathering.
  • Open-source intelligence—commonly known as OSINT—and online research.
  • Background checks, due diligence, and skip tracing.
  • Field investigation techniques and equipment considerations.
  • Documentation, evidence handling, and report writing.
  • Establishing and operating a private investigation business.

Throughout these subjects, the emphasis is on preparation, careful verification, clear documentation, and an understanding of the limits within which investigators work.

Who Is It For?

This edition is intended for aspiring private investigators, practising investigators seeking a reference, and readers interested in understanding how professional investigations are conducted.

It may also interest professionals in legal support, insurance, security, and business due diligence who want a broader understanding of investigative methods and responsibilities.

The Perspective Behind the Book

My professional journey has taken me from service as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force to a career in commercial aviation, and subsequently to establishing The Investigators, my private investigation practice in Ontario.

Across these fields, I have valued the same disciplines: thorough preparation, assessing the reliability of information, exercising sound judgment, and recording decisions clearly.

Those principles inform the approach behind this handbook. Investigation requires more than finding information; it requires understanding what that information establishes, what remains uncertain, and how to communicate the findings responsibly.
